A young Albanian woman engages in a sham marriage with a drug addict in order to obtain Belgian citizenship. Her unscrupulous intentions go even further: in case of an overdose she will get the freedom she has been dreaming of all her life. The problem is that the “husband” is trying to quit drugs and return to normal life …
Based on Dardenne brothers’ “brutal realism” genre, this social drama is based on a true story told to a director by a social worker about their brother – a drug addict being forced by the Russian mafia to marry an Albanian girl. The Dardennes took it and turned this story into a movie, for which they also won a prize for Best Screenplay at the 61st Cannes Film Festival.
