The characters in Philippe Garrel’s film are painfully interdependent partners. His characters lose their “appetite”, have a desire to commit suicide, experience and utter long philosophical monologues about lost love, or are silent. The black-and-white stylistics of the film show even more melancholy and nostalgia for romanticism. With age, Garrel makes more “simple” films, much more understandable to the ordinary, common man. The running time is shorter, the dialogues are simpler, only the theme of family, love and intrigue remains unchanged for his interests.
