Palme d’Or holder film-satire on the modern perception of art, modern European society and their attitudes towards immigrants.
Christian is the curator of the Swedish Museum of Contemporary Art, who enjoys his exciting and “sweet” life. The museum’s new exhibit “Square” and its PR campaign evoke mixed emotions among art connoisseurs. When one day someone steals Christian’s wallet and phone, he goes on a venture, the results of which change his perception of life and the commandments of the “Square”.
Still, it is difficult to attribute this film to a specific genre: absurd surrealism, a social thriller, a satire on contemporary art. It is more of a cocktail of these genres. The Swedish director slowly, unhurriedly, with Scandinavian calm tells and shows us the unobtrusive process of devaluing the values of modern European society. The protagonists of the film – sheltered behind tolerance, emotionally cold and sometimes quite aggressive, are members of the art-bohemian and sophisticated society that create fashionable trends in modern art, but themselves suffer from spiritual hunger.
