Vincent, a French army special forces officer, is plagued by nightmares and noise. Director Alice Winocour’s interest in war correspondents, who said it was difficult to return to normal life after the terrors of war, ended with her meetings with soldiers from Afghanistan and conversations with them. As a result of these conversations, a character appeared in her imagination, who was later portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts. The name “Maryland” has nothing to do with the US state. This is the name of Villa in the south of France in the movie, where the plot takes place. The director chose the word because for the French it means something dubious, dark.
