The Samurai’s Lifestyle, their dignity and soul – from Japanese director Takashi Miike’s drama, which was nominated for a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The impoverished samurai – Hanshirô wants to die with dignity and he chooses the ancestral residence of the “Ii” clan to perform seppuku (harakiri). The ruler of the ancestral residence – Kageyu tries to change his mind and tells the tragic story of a young Ronin (samurai without a lord) who recently made the same request to the clan. Hanshirô is shocked to hear the story of the young Ronin, but he is adamant in his decision and he also begins to tell a story that sheds light on the reason for his decision …

Takashi Miike in his inspiring drama with Japanese simplicity and conciseness tells us story that depicts the difficult fate of a samurai in feudal Japan. The film is a remake of the 1962 classic film of the same name by Masaki Kobayashi.
