2021 Venice Film Festival film about a card player who suffers from a military past.

A former U.S. Marine who was sentenced to eight years in prison for abusing prisoners becomes a professional card player after serving his sentence. He spends most of his time traveling from casino to casino, playing card games and winning small amounts of money. A random meeting with a young person gives him a chance to atone for his past sins and to free himself forever from the ghosts of the past …

The author of the film – Paul Schrader – is the screenwriter of such masterpieces as “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull”. The lead role Schrader gave to Oscar Isaacs, one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. He is accompanied by Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe. With a rather stingy action and emotion in the film, its atmosphere is contagious, while the human and social drama is distinctly striking. The director seeks not so much to show violence against one person, but the emptiness, exhaustion, psychological breakdown of a person as a result of this violence. In addition to all the above, the film combines the features of a card game with attention-grabbing trifles.
