On the outskirts of Helsinki, two people meet each other by fate: emigrant Khaled, who lost his homeland and loved ones, and the former “commuter” Wikström, who invested all his savings in a loser restaurant. The melancholic Wikström and his eccentric colleagues take on the care of a new acquaintance. While Khaled is busy searching for her missing sister, his new friends are looking for a way to turn their restaurant into a popular establishment. In the modern world, the topic of emigration is universal, it is close and understandable to everyone. There are many people around us who have run away from their current existence or dream of seeing their family members. And always ordinary people in a similar situation find hope in each other. We ourselves are each other’s hope.
Aki Kaurismäki in his usual manner, with humor and in a very simple, primitive language tells us about the real problems of society. And as always, he is doing it very well, without any precious decorations and special effects.
